    Improving in-service teacher educators’ competences through design-based research

    Experiences shows that the knowledge of species among teacher students has decreased the last twenty years, and recent research from different parts of the world shows the same: The knowledge of species is decreasing. As an introduction to their science teacher education 39 students followed a course over seven weeks, where they learned more about plant and animal species in three different biotopes: forest, mountain and freshwater. The students replied to a questionnaire five weeks after the course. Both the three days field course and making their own collection of different plants and animals had great positive impact on the students learning of species. The students expressed that the practical work with plants and animals has increased their interest in science, will have positive impact on their work as science teachers and has increased their pleasure to be out in nature. The author ask for a discussion about species knowledge, biodiversity and field work in teacher education.Peer reviewe

    INCORPORATING EVIDENCE-BASED REHABILITATION INTO CLINICAL PRACTICE GUIDELINES

    Objective: Rehabilitation is often neglected in clinical practice guidelines, even when there is evidence for its effectiveness. The Current Rehabilitation development project, documented in this article, aimed to develop processes and structures to incorporate evidence and good practice on rehabilitation and functional capacity into the Finnish national Current Care Guidelines. Design: Descriptive assessment. Methods: The 3-year Current Rehabilitation development project was launched in 2012. It began with an assessment of existing rehabilitation evidence on the Current Care Guideline database and a query to Finnish rehabilitation experts. The project group developed and compiled tools for Current Care editors and guideline panels. The editorial team continued to monitor changes in rehabilitation evidence in the guidelines. Results: During the years 2012-2014, a total of 54 guidelines were published, and rehabilitation was incorporated into 31 of them. The number of rehabilitation-related evidence summaries increased from 49 to 164. During the next 3 years an additional 41 guidelines were published. Rehabilitation was incorporated to 24 of them, and the number of rehabilitation-related evidence summaries increased from 78 to 136. Conclusion: The level of evidence criteria used for rehabilitative interventions were the same as for symptomatic or curative interventions. Evidence showing the effectiveness of rehabilitation increased substantially during the project.Peer reviewe

    Differences in preservice teachers’ readiness to use ICT in education and development of TPACK

    Education for the 21st century society requires the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education. This presents challenges for preservice teacher education. Thus, more cognate understanding about preservice teachers’ readiness to use ICT in education, coupled with knowledge related to ICT in education, is needed. Furthermore, it is important to understand that preservice teachers have various levels of readiness to use ICT in education, thereby creating a demand to investigate sub-groups within preservice teachers. This study focuses on differences of readiness and development of knowledge between preservice teachers’ based on two theoretical constructs: Theory of Planned Behavior and TPACK. Results indicate differences in readiness of preservice teachers’ sub-groups. Still, positive development trends in terms of knowledge of ICT in education can be found during the first two years of preservice teacher education. Limitations and future research are discussed

    Azulene-based compounds for targeting orexin receptors

    A library of 70 000 synthetically accessible azulene-based compounds was virtually screened at the OX2 receptor. Based on the results, a series of azulene derivatives was synthesized and the binding to and activation of both orexin receptor subtypes were assessed. Two most promising binders were determined to have inhibition constants in the 3-9 mu M range and two other compounds showed weak OX2 receptor agonism. Furthermore, three compounds exhibited a concentration-dependent potentiation of the response to orexin-A at the OX1 but not the OX2 receptors. Altogether this data opens new approaches for further development of antagonists, agonists, and potentiators of orexin response based on the azulene scaffold. (C) 2018 Elsevier Masson SAS.     Higher Education Students’ Perceptions of Environmental Issues and Media Coverage

    This study aims to find higher education students’ perceptions about environmental issues and how the perceptions are related to perceptions of media coverage. This study investigates higher education students’ perceptions of the seriousness of environmental issues and their relation to perceptions of media coverage. Higher education students perceived a global problem, lack of clean water, as most serious environmental problem. Media has had an effect on students’ perceptions on environmental issues: when students perceived the problem as serious they also perceived the information in media concerning it appropriate. Students perceived that the media underestimate and obscure some environmental problems such as biological diversity and global warming. It was concluded that higher education educators need more knowledge of students’, future decision makers’ concerns and perceptions about environmental issues to develop more effective teaching practices in higher education. Through education environmental issues literacy, which is a precursor for engaged protection of the environment, can be fostered. This study offers some insights into higher education students’ perceptions of the media’s role in environmental issues.</p

    Neck–Shoulder Region Training for Chronic Headache in Women : A Randomized Controlled Trial

    Objectives: We investigated whether a specific exercise program for the neck–shoulder region reduces headache intensity, frequency, and duration, and how it influences neck disability among women with chronic headache compared to a control group. Design: Two-center randomized controlled trial. Subjects: 116 working-age women. Intervention: The exercise group (n = 57) performed a home-based program with six progressive exercise modules, over 6 months. The control group (n = 59) underwent six placebo-dosed transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation sessions. Both groups performed stretching exercises. Main measures: The primary outcome was pain intensity of headache, assessed using the Numeric Pain Rating Scale. Secondary outcomes were frequency and duration of weekly headaches, and neck disability assessed using the Neck Disability Index. Generalized linear mixed models were used. Results: Mean pain intensity at baseline was 4.7 (95% CI 4.4 to 5.0) in the exercise group and 4.8 (4.5 to 5.1) in the control group. After 6 months the decrease was slight with no between-group difference. Headache frequency decreased from 4.5 (3.9 to 5.1) to 2.4 (1.8 to 3.0) days/week in the exercise group, and from 4.4 (3.6 to 5.1) to 3.0 (2.4 to 3.6) in the control group (between-group p = 0.017). Headache duration decreased in both groups, with no between-group difference. Greater improvement in the Neck Disability Index was found in the exercise group (between-group change −1.6 [95% CI −3.1 to −0.2] points). Conclusion: The progressive exercise program almost halved headache frequency. The exercise program could be recommended as one treatment option for women with chronic headache.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

    Radiographic geometry and clinical glenohumeral range of motion after reverse shoulder athroplasty, a retrospective cohort study

    BackgroundThe range of motion (ROM) in reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA), is mechanically limited by the surrounding bony obstacles especially in abduction and rotation planes. However, the clinical effect of implant positioning, prosthesis design, and individual differences in bone morphology, on ROM is obscure. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between radiographic geometry and clinical glenohumeral (GH) ROM after RSA.MethodsRSA patients operated at Turku University Hospital during 2007–2013 were called for radiological and clinical follow-up. Pre- and postoperative true anteroposterior radiographs were obtained and the positioning of the center of rotation (COR) in relation to the surrounding bony structures was measured. Active and passive shoulder and GH abduction, flexion, internal and external rotation ROM were measured with goniometer. The Constant score (CS) and pain visual analogue scale (VAS) were recorded. The correlation between the radiographically measured parameters and the active and passive ROM and clinical outcome was statistically analyzed.Results91 shoulders were available for analyses with a mean follow-up of 38.7 months ± SD 20 (range 12–83) months. 77% of the patients were female, the mean age was 73 (SD 9) years. The mean angle between the line of supraspinatus fossa, and the line between COR and lateral edge of the acromion (α-angle) was 127° (SD 14) and the mean angle between the lines from lateral edge of the acromion to COR, and from there to the superior edge of the greater tubercle (ÎČ-angle) was 54° (SD 11). The mean active shoulder flexion at follow-up was 118° (SD 26), abduction 104° (SD 32), external rotation 41° (SD 22), internal rotation 77° (SD 21). The mean passive GH flexion was 80° (SD 19), abduction 67° (SD 15), external rotation 31° (SD 16) and internal rotation 34° (SD 14). The mean Constant score at follow-up was 53 (SD 18) and pain VAS 2 (SD 3). The positioning of the radiographically measured COR did not statistically significantly correlate with the ROM or clinical outcome scores.ConclusionsPostoperative radiographically measured two-dimensional geometry and positioning of the COR does not significantly correlate with the glenohumeral range of motion or clinical results after RSA.</p

    Uporaba tristopenjskega modela PROFILES pri zdravstvenem izobrazevanju za prihodnje ucitelje

    This paper focuses on describing the effects of scaffolding on the student teachers’ learning process. The scaffolding is based on using information and communication technology in the PROFILES Three Stage Model; Scenario, Inquiry and Decision-making Stages. Six hours of medicine education intervention is conducted as a part of the student teachers’ program in biology education. The scaffolded group is encouraged to work with the case and presentation templates, online, in Google Sites; the unscaffolded group work only with Word documents. During the Scenario Phase, student teachers discuss the important symptoms of flu, its prevention, and sources from which to find reliable information. In the Inquiry Phase, in the light of online materials and resources, student teachers recall and elaborate on these symptoms. In the Decision-making Phase, student teachers conclude their investigation by making a presentation with suggestions for treatment, and justify it with respect to reliable sources. The learning design is mainly based on the existing Internet site (Teaching children about the proper use of medicines). After their presentations, students reflect on questions that arise and discuss the subject. Results show that both groups discuss the reliability of different websites in the same way. However, the scaffolded group is quite effective in searching for information for their presentation, whereas the unscaffolded group has difficulties in finding relevant information. This suggests that by structuring the activity with Google Sites and presentation templates, scaffolding helps student teachers to work intensively and to prepare their presentations. Presentation modelling seems to be beneficial to the students’ sense making process during the investigation, and it also supports them in coping with the collaborative case-based reasoning process.
